Ten years ago, today...
I opened the doors to Limn in this little brick building on Pennsylvania Street. I designed and drafted the space myself, then worked alongside my father to build many of the shelves and displays by hand. As Limn began to take shape, so did my connections to the neighborhood. Homeira had just opened Rosebud Cafe, and I remember meeting a neighbor across the street who was expecting her first baby. I got to know the neighborhood pups—including one very special Papillon who still makes her rounds today. And to this day, we still run our new candle scents by our unofficial candle critic down the street.
In 2020, you saw me covered in sawdust as I moved and rebuilt during the pandemic, and we welcomed new neighbors like Ametrine Collective and Ashley Schenkein Jewelry Design.
Over the years, we've watched your families grow. We've welcomed sisters coming in together, pampered mothers-in-law visiting to help with a new baby, and helped dads and their little boys choose Mother's Day gifts. We've tracked down favorite candle scents for thoughtful fiancés and helped you find the perfect hostess gift on the way to a dinner party.
We've also had the privilege of caring for you through life's more difficult moments and witnessing the compassion you've shown one another through illness and hardship.
On a personal note, some of the most inspiring relationships in my life have come through Limn. I've had the honor of working alongside so many gifted and authentic people—Kari, Zahra, Aimee, Sarah, Katy, Susan, Chris, Shane, and so many others who have helped shape this little business.
Many of you have come to know my family, too. You've seen my dad quietly installing fixtures, my mother helping us decorate and stock the shelves, and perhaps even purchased one of the Pride bracelets handmade by my abuela. My grandparents helped us bring Osmosis MD (our most beloved line) into the shop during our very first year.
You've been here as I've learned, adapted, made mistakes, and grown. Next month, I'll graduate with my master's degree in Entrepreneurship, another milestone in a journey I never could have imagined when I first opened Limn.
You have watched me grow into a version of myself I could never have imagined.
I created Limn to care for people who so often fall through the cracks. People whose needs aren't always understood, whose skin needs more than a conventional approach, and who deserve to feel genuinely seen.
By believing in my dream, you've made me feel seen, too.
Thank you for ten years of trust, friendship, kindness, and community. Thank you for supporting a small, independent business and allowing us to be part of your lives.
With immense gratitude,
Brittany Guzmán Taylor
